Men Kill Me

-Mohja Kahf

How they think the sun is all for them
and the water is all for them
how they accept the wind at their backs
as if wind was the handmaid of their father and they inherited her without a murmur
Men kill me
how they think the earth of green and gold and God
is all…

I wrote a story. You can klick on the link and read it if you wish.

Me: The picture in the newspaper.
He: Yes. I remember that. The photographer asked me to hold the rifle in an offhand manner. Is that not a horrible request?

Me: The caption said “Shortly after our interview, the young solider was hit by a bomb and rushed to a makeshift hospital”.
He: Yes. That hurt. It was one of the russian cluster bombs. I was badly hit in the waist.
Me: Did you make it?
He: No. It hit internal organs. It took nine hours of pain for it to end.
Me: “The soft voice of the soldier still haunts me. When will the world rise to the task and bring this conflict to an end?”
He: When will you?”

"You will hear thunder and remember me,
And think: she wanted storms. The rim
Of the sky will be the colour of hard crimson,
And your heart, as it was then, will be on fire."

“Judgments”I took this last year, but in retrospect, I think it’s my strongest piece from high school.
Working on this project really made me examine my own opinions, preconceptions and prejudices about “slutty” women and women who choose to cover all of their skin alike. I used to assume that all women who wore Hijabs were being oppressed, slut-shame, and look down on and judge any woman who didn’t express her sexuality in a way that I found appropriate.
I’d like to think I’m more open now.
